The Concept Behind the Design

The concept behind This build was the idea of the USA getting to the moon only to find an alien there with the same idea. While not very original as a concept, it came from a Daffy Duck parody of Buck Rodgers made in the 50's it did seem like an appropriate concept for this project.

With this as the starting point I needed to have some where to go with it, so I decided I wanted a Commander Cody ( the serial not the rock band) style moon landing, but still keep the same cartoon feeling of the looney tunes episode plus play a little parody on the original moon landing, hence the title "Rivalry - I got here first" and my choice to make the USA astronaut an Eagle.

13-12-08 Logo For Motivation

Ok so this is not really strictly part of the build but I thought I would create a logo to help keep my motivation up while waiting for some parts to turn up to move on with the build, and I thought I would share it with you guys

Building The Base

For the base I decided to use a 30 by 30 cm piece of foam board. my plan was to have the whole diorama set out around a central crater so I set about making a former for this out of card. I worked out what size I wanted the crater diameter wise the did some calculations to work out how long I needed the card and how high and then just cut some triangle segments out so I could easily wrap it around.

Once completed I then glued the former together using pva glue, and stuck it to the base with hot melt glue. once dry I then began to cover the base with mod rock to give it the begriming of a texture.

With the base covered I could then move on to adding some texture to the base using mod rock to create "peaks" and "valleys" on the ground to give it hopefully some realism. it was also here that I added some shape and definition to the crater
